' The garden plots are 900 square feet (30 X 30) with a limited number of 450 square foot (30x15) plots. Each plot is accessible by a three-foot wide path to be maintained by the adjacent plot gardener. The gardens are plowed and disked in the spring and the soil is amended according to the recommendations of the soil test analysis taken biannually. Planting may begin as soon as the gardens are opened and must be at least partially planted by June 1. Regular garden plots are leased for $40 a year and smaller plots are $25. Families can apply to the leased garden plots manager for a reduced lease rate if necessary.
Water conservation is practiced at the gardens. Wise use of this essential resource includes watering the plants directly (not watering weeds, paths or unseeded soil or using overhead sprinklers). Mutual cooperation using the water supply includes limiting the use of a spigot for 15 minutes if another gardener is waiting, rewinding the hose to its hanger, and turning the water off at the main spigot. Four water faucets are available to serve the garden.
Use of chemicals will be regulated and organic products are encouraged. Any herbicides (weed killers) are forbidden. The garden manager will assist you in selecting organically based pesticides and fungicides if needed. The use of organic mulches for weed control is recommended. You may use plastic mulch but you must be responsible for removing it along with any tie downs.
Parking is provided in the lot in front of the Friar's Nook. The monastery groundskeepers must have access at all times to move their equipment around the farm building. You are invited to relax on the lawn by the gardens, have a picnic or chat with your fellow gardeners. A few chairs are provided for you to relax near the gardens and you are welcome to bring your own.
Pets are strictly forbidden in the gardens because of food safety issues. Pets must be leashed and waste cleaned up if visiting anywhere else on monastery grounds.
The gardens are closed from dusk to dawn.
